Faith and space faring
When the natives first saw a Western ship upon their shore, it might as well have been Christ himself. It was violent and inevitable. Even if the Europeans never killed a single native intentionally, the disease and new species still would. The natives had no chance. They didn’t see it coming, but it could be worse.
Easter Island suffered from deforestation. Were they stupid? Or were they trying to grow their economy until the could finally get out? Environmentalists fear that our technology is going to cause us to strip our planet of resources in the same manner. It would be ironic if our desire to survive ends up killing us.
Easter Island sounds like the Tower of Babel story. Getting to heaven is important. We should go as fast as possible, but not faster.
A ship breaking onto shore is one thing, but an alien ship looming over us is quite another. In the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Earth is wiped out to make room for a hyperspace bypass.
Christ will return as a grim reaper. Get off the island while you can. When Jesus comes he will slice you to pieces. Christ is perfect. You are not. You will lose.
But don’t get off too quickly.
